# Amplitude vs PostHog: different species, same genus

PostHog bundles analytics, replay, flags, and experiments into a developer-first, usage-priced platform. Amplitude goes deeper on the analytics itself. The choice is mostly about who owns analytics in your org.

## Verdict

In our implementation work: engineering-led teams that want one usage-priced tool for analytics, flags, and replay - and are happy living in a developer-flavored interface - thrive on PostHog. Organizations where PMs and analysts are the primary users, or that need enterprise governance, get more from Amplitude. Both are strong; the failure mode is picking the one built for the other culture.

## Comparison

| Dimension | Amplitude | PostHog |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Philosophy | Managed product-analytics platform, analyst/PM-first | Open-source-rooted all-in-one, developer-first |
| Bundled tooling | Analytics core; replay & experiments on plans/tiers | Analytics, replay, flags, experiments, surveys in one bill |
| Analysis ceiling | Deeper behavioral analysis at scale | Covers most product questions; ceiling arrives sooner |
| Hosting | SaaS | SaaS; open-source self-hosting exists but is officially unsupported, free-tier features only |
| Pricing model | Event-based tiers; upper tiers custom | Usage-based, published rates, pay-per-product |
| Best-fit team | Product/data orgs with dedicated analytics users | Engineering-led startups consolidating tools |

## When Amplitude is the right call

- PMs and analysts - not engineers - are the daily users
- You need governance, RBAC, and multi-team structure
- Behavioral analysis depth is the point

## When PostHog is the right call

- Engineers own analytics and want flags + replay + analytics in one tool
- Transparent usage pricing matters to you
- You want the open-source escape hatch and accept self-hosting is unsupported, free-tier-features-only

## FAQ

### Is PostHog a real alternative to Amplitude?

Yes - for engineering-led teams it is often the right one. Its analytics go deep enough for most product questions and the bundle (flags, replay, experiments) replaces two or three other bills. Amplitude keeps the edge in analysis depth, governance, and analyst-friendly UX at organizational scale.

### Can you migrate from PostHog to Amplitude or the reverse?

Both directions are event-schema migrations of the kind we do routinely - the concepts map well. The commonest real-world path we see is PostHog-to-Amplitude as a company's analytics ownership moves from engineering to a product org; the reverse happens when consolidating tools under engineering.
